Lihat & Ketemu – Common Mistake

In Indonesian, the verb “lihat” primarily means “to see” or “to look at,” which implies a visual action. So when someone says, “Aku mau lihat keluargaku,” it suggests they want to visually observe or look at their family members, which might not accurately convey the intended meaning of wanting to meet or spend time with them.

On the other hand, the verb “ketemu” is colloquially used to mean “to meet” or “to encounter.” When someone says, “Aku mau ketemu keluargaku,” it indicates a desire to physically meet or spend time with their family members, rather than just observing them visually.

Here are some other examples to illustrate the difference between “lihat” and “ketemu” in Indonesian:

  1. Aku mau lihat teman-temanku.” (I want to see my friends.) Here, “lihat” implies the desire to visually observe or look at one’s friends, perhaps indicating a wish to catch up on their activities through social media or photos.
  2. Aku mau ketemu teman-temanku.” (I want to meet my friends.) In contrast, “ketemu” conveys the intention to physically meet or spend time with one’s friends, indicating a desire for face-to-face interaction.
  3. “Saya mau lihat pemandangan indah di pegunungan.” (I want to see the beautiful scenery in the mountains.) “Lihat” is used here to express the desire to visually enjoy the scenery without necessarily interacting with it directly.
  4. “Saya senang ketemu teman lama di acara tersebut.” (I’m happy to meet an old friend at the event.) “Ketemu” is employed to emphasize the joy of reuniting and spending time with an old friend in person.

Understanding the nuances of these verbs and their appropriate usage in different contexts is essential for foreign learners of Indonesian to effectively communicate their intentions and avoid misunderstandings.
